Beck Knob

Beck cemetery is a family burying ground on what was once the Beck farm. Many members of the family are buried there but all the graves are unmarked. Joshua Beck, a prominent citizen of Hill City, seeing the need for a cemetery for slaves and their families, donated the land for Beck Cemetery. In appreciation to Mr. Beck, the burying ground was called Beck Knob Graveyard. On May 13, 1888, the sons of Joshua Beck deeded the property to Hurst Memorial M. E. Church. In 1968 the North Side Garden Club cleared the property and restored much of the cemetery. The cemetery, now overgrown, has very few markers remaining. Most of this information has been provided from death certificate research performed by Alma Webb. Beck Knob Cemetery is located on Dartmouth Street in north Chattanooga.
