Cemetery

The land was given by Mr. Allen Pickett in the mid1800‘s. Allen Pickett and his wife, Mary "Polly" Vandergriff were buried here in the1870‘s, but their graves are no longer marked.

 Sawyer Cemetery is located on Sawyer Cemetery Rd., Signal Mountain, Walden's Ridge, Hamilton Co., Tennessee. To visit the Sawyer Cemetery, travel North on US 127 (between Chattanooga, TN and Dunlap, TN). About 1/4 of a mile before you reach the Sequatchie County line, make a right hand turn onto Corral Rd., follow Corral Road until it ends (about 3 miles), making a left turn onto Sawyer Road, travel about 3 more miles where the road will split, Sawyer Road will go to the left and Sawyer Cemetery Road (old Sawyer Rd.) will be straight ahead. About a mile on this road, almost to the end of Sawyer Cemetery Road, on the left, you will find Sawyer Cemetery.

 Sawyer Cemetery is edged with a wooded area on three sides with a black, iron fence along the road frontage and is about 2 & 1/2 acres in size. 40% of the graves have no identification and are marked with a flat sandstone, a round mountain stone, or no marker at all. Across the road from the Sawyer Cemetery, was the Welcome Hill Church, which is now gone and being replaced with a subdivision.

I have done my best to record the names and dates of the individuals that are buried in this cemetery as they appeared on their markers but mistakes can be made. I have also left out the names and dates of the individuals that appear to be still living, out of respect for these families.
