weingartnerDescendants of James Iles and Ellender Knight

James Iles, b. June 10, 1802, North Carolina, (son of  Rhodam Iles and Mary ' Polly'  Iles).

He married Ellender Knight, b. Dec 26, 1811, Census Says OHIO/KY, (daughter of Jonathan

Knight and Ellender d. c1870, Sale Creek, Hamilton Co., TN.  James died  Aug 10, 1868, Sale

Creek, Hamilton Co., TN, buried: Mt Vernon Cemetery, Sale Creek, TN.

James Iles is thought to be the son of Rhodam Iles and Mary "Polly" Iles and is mentioned in the

will of his grandfather, John Iles of Halifax County, N.C., written September 25, 1812 and exhibit-

ed in open court February 1817.

James Iles first appears in the 1830 Bledsoe County, TN census, page 280.  Included in his

household are his wife, an older woman( 60-70) and two teen-age girls (10-15), possibly his

Mother," Polly " and two sisters.

In 1835 Bledsoe County Deeds, Page 339 George W. Campbell to  Sam McReynolds

1369 acres in Bledsoe County, improvements by James Iles, John Pope, Nathan Sweat

and Solomon Beason.  Recorded March 19, 1835.   Witnessed by Valentine Spring,

     William Anderson and James Lloyd.

1840 Bledsoe County census Page 13, District 5 James Iles and his wife are recorded

with two small children, John Iles and Nancy Iles.

1840 Bledsoe County census Page 15 District 5,  Elenor Knight, widow of Jonathan Knight,

and her youngest son are living not too far from James and his wife.  In this same area are

the Bromley (Brumley) and Grigory (Gregory) families.  These families married into the

     Knight family.

James Iles purchased eighty-eight acres of land on March 15, 1844, at the Bledsoe County

Courthouse,  formerly owned by Eleanor  Knight, widow of Jonathan Knight, for 1843

delinquent taxes. This property had been transferred to Jonathan Knight on January 20, 1825

Entry No. 194.  The Gazette of Chattanooga advertised the sale of the properties for delinquent

taxes in their Saturday, May 18, 1844, publication.

According to James Iles great granddaughter, Ida Potter Brackett, the daughter of

Tennessee Iles and John C. Potter, James Iles drove his cattle across the mountain

from Pikeville to Sale Creek where he spent the night going on to the cattle yard at

Chattanooga,  the next day.  On February 7th 1850 James Iles purchased 77 acres of

land in Sale Creek, Hamilton Co., TN from A. Martin, Record Book H  No. 165.

I have been unable to find a record of the 88 acres of land in Pikeville being sold

back to the Knight family, but it did revert to a member of the family at some point.

The 1850 Hamilton County, TN census, Page 149 lists James Iles, his wife Ellender

Knight Iles along with children, John Iles, Nancy Iles, William A. Iles and Jesse Iles.

A daughter, Eleanor J. "Leah" was born in 1854.

Before the death of David Gray, he worked up a family tree chart for Michael Iles,

While he  was in high school.  David Gray lists James Iles wife as Mary.  Because

of the change in ages recorded in the census and the inability to find the older sister

of Ellender Knight Iles, it could be possible that Ellender is the second wife of James

Iles and her older sister, Mary, was his first wife.

The will of James Iles was written on August 9, 1868 and proven at the Hamilton County,

TN Court at Harrison the October 14, 1868 - November 18, 1868 term.

James Iles is buried at the Mt Vernon Cemetery in Sale Creek in the old portion of the

cemetery  behind the Church down the hillside.  There is a monument marking his grave

site.  The inscription reads "Sleep on dear one and take thy rest, God called thee home,

he thought it best".  Age 66 yrs and 2 months Born June 10, 1802 Died August 10, 1868.

Second Generation

1.     John Iles, (1.James1) b. May  24, 1838, Pikeville, Bledsoe Co., TN.  He married Sarah P. Shipley,

1856, in Hamilton Co., TN. (Marriage Records lost prior to 1857), b. June 09, 1836, Sale Creek,

1860 Hamilton Co., TN Census H281-91  John Iles and wife, Sarah Shipley Iles and children,

     Tennessee 3, and Alexander 1.

John Iles nickname "Drummie" came from his playing the drums in the Civil War.  He was

a Drummer Boy.  He enlisted at Sale Creek, TN and was mustered in on February 20, 1862

at Cumberland Ford along with his two brothers into Co. I, 2nd Regiment.  The three boys

became ill from food poisoning at Flat Lick, KY.  Within two months after mustering in

both of his brothers were dead.

John Iles statement of the incident is recorded in his pension application:

On or about the first of March 1862, he was taken sick with fever originating from exposure,

the regiment being all the while marching and filing we was out of reach  any hospital and

I was treated first at Barbourville, KY.  I was next treated at Cumberland Gap by Regiment

Surgeon and in August 1862 the federal General Morgan evacuated the gap and being

unable to march and no facilities to carry the sick I was left subject to capture.  I crept

out of the place before the Rebels came and slipped through Kentucky Mountains home.

The fever and exposure settled in my jaw and took out one half my upper jaw.

He was treated in hospitals as follows: by hospital seward at Barboursville, Kentucky

next at Cumberland Gap next at Cumberland Ford and next there in Knox County, Kentucky

by citizen Dr by the name of Gooden, who took out my jaw bone upper jaw.

That he has not been employed in the military or naval service otherwise as stated above

and I was never able for doing any more during the war and at the time of discharging

was unable to go to Nashville and therefore was never discharged or received pay or

     bounty.

This application appears to be in his handwriting since the signature and the writing

in the statement look the same.

John Iles tried from 1879 to 1902 to get his dishonorable discharge corrected.  There

are numerous affidavits in his pension file signed and written by fellow soldiers and

     friends.

He signed an affidavit for his brother in law Martin Van Buren Elsea in

his pension application made in Texas.
