Bill married Mary Elizabeth MASSENGALE about 1839. Mary was born Jun 2 1814 in Tennessee. She died Feb 12 1911 in Hamilton Co., Tennessee and was buried in Tittle Cemetery, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN.
I have assigned Mary Elizabeth to this father and mother due to the 1830 census and the relationships these families had all through the history of the family, property, burials and naming practices. The 1840 Marion County, TN census district 6 shows James Massengill as next door to William Thompson and Mary Elizabeth who have one child 0-5. In 1850 the census shows them very close by and this association of property continues to this date. 1840 Marion County District 6 shows them as neighbors.
Her tombstone has Elizabeth M. Thompson, all census records are recorded as Mary.
They had the following children:
+ 2 M i. Madison J. THOMPSON was born about 1840.
3 M ii. David Matthew THOMPSON "Matt" was born about 1842. He died 1862 in Died at home near the suck.
Family history is that Matt was home on furlong from CSA and Union soldiers came to his home and family farm. Chattanooga was surrounded on all sides by the Union Army. There was some kind of altercation and a gun was used to chase the intruders away. William provided his son food, horse, guns and ammo to escape west. He rode away and was never heard from again. After the war another brother was sent on more than one occassion to try and locate him but never a trace was found.
Info passed down to Iley Thompson by his Grandfather.

24. James Norris THOMPSON (James Irvin, William) was born Aug 21 1878 in Hamilton Co., Tennessee. He was buried in Florence, Alabama.
Information on the family of James Norris Thompson, courtesy of Dr. William James Bradberry.
Captain Jim as he was known was a typical "riverman". He represented the "old time" breed of men who took to the river as a boy and fought low water, navigational hazards, floods, boiler explosions and crude machinery failures. He lived to see the day of a controlled Tennessee River harnessed by dams he helped build and populated by the shining marvels of modern steamboats and sleek diesels. His experience ranged from wooden cribs and stone wing wall dikes to huge concrete locks and dams. From wooden barges and dipper dredges to steel hulls and powerful suction dredges. He was a licensed steamboat pilot and spent most of his life, approximately 36 years of service, on the Tennessee River. He began his career as a laborer, he advanced and was in charge of the Tennessee River Fleet and U. S. Boatyard for many years. He was once called the "best cofferdam man in the world".
