Hearing the call of his country, Andrew Jackson Penney left his wife and two small children when he enlisted at Barberville, TN as a private in Company C 5th Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteer Infantry USA on February 25, 1862. He served in the war for two years until being wounded at the battle of Resaca, Georgia on May 14, 1864. After spending two weeks in a hospital in Chattanooga, Andrew was transferred to Knoxville where he remained an additional five months. He recovered from his wounds sufficiently enough to return to duty and was discharged in Nashville on April 4, 1865.
In an affidavit for his pension application in 1885, Andrew's brother, George Washington Penny, gave the following description of the wounds Andrew received at the Battle of Resaca:
" The facts to which he here testifies to are derived from being a near neighbor with claimant for many years prior to the war having served with him in the same company and regiment during the war. Lived a near neighbor to him all the time since the war. I further state of my own certain knowledge that I no that soldier Andrew J. Penney was wounded at Buzzard Roost Ga on or about the Fall of 1864 as well as now remembered. That he was struck with a piece of a shell or fractured shell on or near the buckle of his army belt. It was thought and generally conceived the shell first struck him on the buckle of his belt then ranged down between his legs and tore and fractured him considerably in the region of the groin. Where the piece of shell first struck him up near the region of the breast bone or stomach it tore his flesh in such a manner as to cause him to become ruptured at that place. I have repeatedly seen the place since his discharge and seen it protrooded out as large as a hen's egg. It gives him great pain and disables him very much from performing manual labor to make a support for himself and family. I was to with the command which claimant was wounded tho seen in a few days thereafter. Have seen him often and repeatedly since discharge and know the statements here made to be correct. I further declare that I have no interest in said case and am not concerned in its prosecution. George W. Penney July 11, 1885."

.The James Forbish, William Lemons (Laymon) and John Smith families joined
Joseph and Almeda on a wagon train headed for Bollinger County, Missouri in the
early to mid 1870's. The 1880 Census of Wayne County, Missouri, Mill Spring
Township shows the Looney (Louny), Forbush and Lemon (Lamon) families. No
mention of the Smiths. It also shows Joseph and Almeda's children, 4 born in
Tennessee and 2 in Missouri. First Missouri birth June, 1874, so we can assume
they left Tennessee by 1873.Records cannot be found for the marriage of Almeda
Penney and Joseph Looney. Among Almeda's pension application papers is an
attest from the County Clerk of Hamilton County. It states that all records
prior to 1864 were destroyed during the late (Civil) war.

Bollinger County, Missouri. Almeda is buried to his left in an unmarked grave.
His son Andrew Looney is buried next to him. There is also an unmarked grave
outlined with rocks. This is probably Andrew's wife, Ibb Ellen Kerr
Looney. Joseph served in the Civil War and fought for the Union. He was a
Private in Company I, 2nd Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Tennessee Volunteers.
Most of Company I enrolled at Sale Creek, Hamilton County, Tennessee and
mustered n at Cumberland Ford, Kentucky, 28 February 1862. Muster out date not
known. Muster rolls of the regiment are defective, a large portion of them were
captured along with the Regiment at Rogersville on 6 November 1863. In his
declaration for pension, made July 12 1893, Joseph stated he was hurt by a
wagon turning over while on a retreat from Cumberland Gap to the Ohio River
when in service. Physical description was given as 5'11" with light complexion,
light hair and blue eyes. Almeda filed for and received a pension for Joseph's
Civil Way service. On the pension application the mustering out date is listed
as 31 October 1864. Age 20 (which would make his birth date 1844) and other
personal descriptions not of record. A very interesting medical note: Medical
records show him treated July 25 to August 31, 1864 for traumatic stricture of
the urethra. Says when a boy was crushed about his privates in fall between two
millstones. Surgery was performed including a circumcision and removal of a
tumor. According to Dessie Looney Perkins, her grandfather, Joseph Looney, left
home at age 14. None of the children or grandchildren knew anything about the
Looney family.Records cannot be found for the marriage of Almeda Penney and
