Willis(ton): Taken from "Kith and Kin" of Eastern Carteret County, by Thelma Pake Simpson and Rebecca Willis Sanders. Copyright 1997 by Carteret County Historical Society, Inc. P. O. Box 481 Morehead City, N.C. 28557.

The General Armory by Sir Bernard Burke, page 1117, has this to say concerning the Willis family: Seated Halsnead Park and Hall of the Hill Co., Lancaster; descended from Thomas Willis, member of family Willis of Berkshire, who removed to Lancaster (temp of Charles II) and purchased estates there. His son Martin Willis, Esq. of Halsnead married Ellen daughter of William de Anyers. Ralph Earle, Esq., grandson of granddaughter Elizabeth de Anyers (sister of Ellen) in hearted some Willis estate from kinsman Daniel (son of Martin) and assumed the name and arms of Willis.

John Williston was the progenitor of all future Willis(ton) in eastern Carolina. He owned land in the area that was and still is a town called Williston and is located on Williston Creek. It was said that John's grave was located across the bridge north of where the present Williston Community Cemetery is located. By 1820 the name was shortened to WILLIS.

THE TOWN OF WILLISTON, N.C.: This area of Carteret County is separated from Smyrna by Williston Creek and from Davis by a part of Jarrat's bay called first Malburn Creek, second Howland's Creed, and third Smyra Creek, and was included in Smyrna Township as late as 1900.

The Wade and Williston families appear to be the first settlers; both Williston and Wade Creek are mentioned in a deed of 1741. Wade's Creek divided the village of Smyra from the (of) present day Williston.

John Williston, whose name appears on a 1723 Freeholder list, was living in the area before the name of the creek was changed from Nelson's to present day Williston Creek. Today many "outside" families have purchased land on Wade's and Williston Creeks, and are enjoying the privileges of oystering, clamming, fishing, crabbing, and shrimping, shared by the early settlers of long ago.
