Known and Esteemed – The Funeral Friday
Mrs. L(ysle) B.
(Abigail)
Caldwell
, age 75 years, died at the residence of her son, the Rev. Ernest B. Caldwell,
Tuesday night. The deceased lady was the wife of the Rev. L. B. Caldwell, whose
death occurred Nov. 11.
Mrs. Caldwell
was probably one of the best known and loved women in
Chattanooga
. She was born
Sept. 26, 1836
, at L’Oringal,
Canada
. She was the daughter of E. A. Johnson. She married L. B. Caldwell
Nov. 18, 1857
. The couple moved to this state in 1880, Mr. Caldwell serving as pastor of
churches in
Johnson City
,
Chattanooga
and
Athens
. At
Athens
he was the head of what was then Grant university, later merged into the
University
of
Chattanooga
. She was a life long member of the M. E. church, and her work in the different
organizations of the church was of the highest character.
She is survived
by four sons, the Rev. Ernest B. Caldwell, who is missionary to
China
; the Rev. William M. Caldwell, pastor of the M. E. church at
Frankfort
,
Ky.
; the Rev. Harry Caldwell, who is now serving as missionary at Fuchow, China,
and Lisle M. Caldwell, of Cleveland, O.
The funeral
services will take place at the Highland Park M. E. church Friday afternoon at
2 o’clock
. The services will be conducted by the Rev. J. Monroe Wolfe. Addresses will be
made by Bishop W. F. Anderson and other prominent pastors of the city. Interment
will be beside the grave of her husband in
Forest Hills
cemetery.
