Resident of Chattanooga For Many Years Dies After Long Illness.

            John R. Dean, a resident of Chattanooga for many years, died at his residence, 518 Douglass street, after a long illness yesterday morning. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 11 a. m. today. Dr. J. W. Bachman will officiate.

            Mr. Dean was born in Bedford county, Tenn., June 15, 1840. He studied law under A. S. Colyar and for a time practiced his profession in Bedford. During this time he was superintendent of education in his county. When the war broke out he enlisted in the Confederate army and served with credit. He has been a member of the N. B. Forrest camp for many years.

            In 1880 he came to Chattanooga and began the practice of his profession. In 1885 he formed the real estate firm of John R. Dean & Co., which was prominent for a time. Of late years ill health has made it impossible for him to attend to business matters.

            Mr. Dean married Miss Clara Stahlsmith. He is survived by Mrs. Dean and four children, Miss Daisy R., John R., Jr., Miss Rebecca S. and Miss Mary C.

            Pall bearers at the funeral will be J. W. Faxon, J. A. Graham, W. H. Harris, J. W. Webster, Dr. A. W. Palmer, and I. C. Mansfield.
