J. HARRIS DIES AT RESIDENCE
Georgia Native, Moved to City in 1899 -
Services Tomorrow Afternoon
Mrs. Margaret Catherine Harris, widow of Thomas J Harris,
died yesterday afternoon at her home, 1600 East 12th Street,
after several weeks of illness. Had she lived until Aug. 19 she
would have been 88 years old.
Mrs. Harris was born Aug 19 1859 in Murray County, Georgia,
one of six children of Samuel Anderson Keith and Mrs. Malinda
Miller Keith. She was married in 1879 to the late Thomas
Jefferson Harris, also of a family of pioneer settlers in north
Georgia. They lived in Murray and Whitfield counties in Georgia
until they moved to Chattanooga in 1899.
Mr. Harris practiced law in Chattanooga until his death in
1924.
Mrs. Harris had been an active and faithful member of the
Baptist Tabernacle since coming to Chattanooga. She joined the
Holly Creek Baptist Church in Murray County as a child.
Nine children survive. They are Anderson W Harris, Dawson B
Harris, Keith J Harris, Freeman R Harris, and Sam D Harris of
Chattanooga; Mrs R E Lansford, Lakeland Fla.; Maynard J Harris,
Atlanta; James E Harris, Knoxville; and Mrs. G C Robinson,
Mobile Ala.
Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Baptist Tabernacle,
Long and 21st Streets, Thursday at 2:30 pm., the Rev. C H Petty
officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.
The body is at the Page-Hancock Funeral Home.
