Mrs. Hilda R. Newman Dies, Retired Teacher
Mrs. Hilda R. Newman, 63, retired Tyner High School biology
teacher who was named in 1969 as Tennessee's Outstanding Biology Teacher, died
in a hospital here Monday.
She began her teaching career in Hamilton County in
1941 and was at the Tyner School beginning in 1948. She was a graduate of
Chattanooga High School and held degrees from Middle Tennessee State University.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, National Science
Teachers Association, Association of Classroom Teachers and national, state and
regional educational associations.
Survivors include her husband, A. F.
Newman, Ooltewah; one son, James Douglas Newman, New Haven, Connecticut; sister
Miss Viva Lee Burks, Ooltewah; brother Rupert T. Burks, Sr., Chattanooga; two
grandsons.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. in the West
Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Hills
Cemetery.
