Herman Oren (Jug) Underwood, 65, a former Chattanooga fireman, died
Monday in a hospital here.
Before his retirement in 1968, Mr. Underwood had worked for nearly forty
years in the fire department. He was a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church. He
was a graduate of Central High School, where he belonged to the football team.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Underwood is survived by his wife, Mrs. Thelma Gannaway Underwood;
son Joseph D. Underwood, and a brother, Arch M. Underwood, all of Chattanooga,
and three grand-children, Steven B. Underwood, Jody Lynn Underwood and Joseph
Underwood Jr.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the West Chapel of
the Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. Fate Thomas officiating. Burial will be
in Buttram Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ralph Carson, Randolph White, Willard Williamson, Joe
Knowles, John Eldridge and W. P. Stockdale. Honorary pallbearers will be members
of the Chattanooga Fire Department.
The body will be in the West Chapel of the Chattanooga Funeral Home.
