J. A. PENDERGRASS, 83, passed away at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. C. H. Gamble, with whom he had made his home for the past two years. Mr.
Pendergrass was born in Birchwood, TN, on April 6, 1862, and had lived there all
his life until he came to Chattanooga. He was a member of the Birchwood
Church and had been a Christian for a number of years. He has a host of
friends and relatives who are left to mourn their loss while it is heaven's
gain. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Nancy Pendergrass; eight children, Mrs.
Charles Gamble, Arvel Pendergrass of Chattanooga, Mrs. John White, Langston,
Alabama; Mrs. Lucille Collins, Madison, Alabama; Lester, Newt and Raleigh
Pendergrass, all of Birchwood; Oscar Pendergrass, Cleveland, Tenn. Thirty-seven
grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held
at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the chapel of the National Funeral Home,
with the Reverend Hobart Linkous and Lester Lewis conducting. Burial will
be in Greenwood Cemetery. The following nephews will serve as pallbearers;
R. C. Webb, Earl Bower, Chester Bower, Clyde Bower, Roy Shahan, and Roy
Pendergrass. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Baker, Reece Bare, Walter
Bishoff, Claude Murray, Charles Sturgill, Ross Collins, Jeff Defriese, Fred
Edgemon, Newt Newell, Sam Norman, LePhonso Sims, William Smith. Flower
girls will be Betty and Barbara Ann Pendergrass, Jo Ann and Donna Ruth Gamble,
Betty Daniels, Shirley Jean Hotalen, Dixie June Griffin, Naomi Ferguson and Mary
Alice Bass. Arrangements are by the National Funeral Home.
