Elbert S. Long

1898 - 1982
The son of Anderson F. Long and Mary Ellen Shropshire; he was born in Old James County in 1898. He married Marie Griffin of Memphis, TN.
With his keen interest in education, he served on the Hamilton County Board of Education from 1947 – 1953. Elbert S. Long School located at 6779 E. Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, Tennessee was named for him. From 1950-1985, the school housed grades 1 through 9, and from 1985-1989, grades K through 6. The school closed in 1989, as part of the school reconfiguration plan. It reopened in 1991, as Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts.
In his professional life he was vice-president of Newton Chevrolet.
