There are also some McInturff family members who are buried at the Birchwood Baptist Church Cemetery. The cemetery was once part of the Mcinturff family farm. When a friend of the family was called to battle during the civil war, he commented that if he died, he would like to be buried under the large cedar tree on a small knoll on the farm. His wish was granted. Being that he was a confederate soldier, he was buried in an unmarked grave for fear of grave robbers looking for confederate "souveniers". Other burials soon followed. As for the accuracy of this information, the story has been passed down from some of the older folks in the Birchwood community---but since stories tend to become embellished over the years--may be true--may not.

Does the Hamilton County Genealogical Society host visiting genealogists as far as recommendations on best research places, accomodations, resturants, etc. God Bless and Thank-You in advance for any information you may send my way. Hello, I am searching for information on my grandfather, possible gggggrandfather, named Wauhatchie Glass. I have found census records showing a Jonathan H. Glass in the area. I have no hard evidence just legend of him being my grandfather but does anyone know Wauhatchie's english name? I am stuck around 1818 on my grandfather William Van Glass but can not find his father, I was told by a Cherokee Chief that there was Cherokee Chief Van Glass around that time period but all I can find is Wauhatchie Glass. Could this Cherokee Chief be father of Chief Van Glass or the same person? Any ideas?

William Cook, Born in SC or TN

I along with a couple of others in the Cook line, have hit a brick wall. We're trying to search for William Cook. He was my great-great-grandfather. Here is what I have on him. He was born perhaps in TN or SC. His wife's name was Katherine (possibly Catherine?) I don't have a birthday or anything like that, but I do have some of his children's b-days and such. This family lived in
Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN for many years. William Cook was murdered by marauders during the Civil War in AR or MO. His body was never found. Here are his three boys: William Jasper Cook, b. 11/24/1835 in Chattanooga, TN. Thomas Jefferson Cook, b. 12/24/1833 in Chattanooga, TN. Samuel Doak Cook (my great-grandfather), b. 5/5/1844 in Chattanooga, TN. Helen Cook Bellah (married a county judge in Marble Falls, TX). Here is part of my family story from records. The three Cook brothers moved to Texas before the Civil War, while William Cook moved to AR or MO to avoid the effects of war. After no success there, he sold the farm and was preparing to move back to TN (sent his wife and daughter on ahead), when he was attacked by marauders, perhaps Jayhawkers, looking for money from the sale of his property. Since he had sent the money along with his wife, he could not satisfy their demands and they took him off and killed him. His sons, having come home to help the family move, attempted to locate him and the maurauders with no success. Samuel Doak "Doc" Cook told the story in latter years of having hunted down the villains and lynched them. His father's body was never recovered. This was from the oral history of the family with many details supplied by Leon Cook. So I need some help with this. I've looked at the 1860 census for Hamilton Co., TN and couldn't find them. But I'm lost on where to look, and I'm basically kind of new at this anyway. Do you have any ideas? Like I said, we're hitting a brick wall and want to find William Cook's ancestors. Thanks, Susie Cook Tune

I have my fathers birth certificate from Hamilton County TN, I'm trying to learn about my grandfather Ed Grant. I understand that Ed Grant, Eldie (Forester) Grant and my father lived in Chattanooga in 1927 and that Ed Grant died in a railroad accident. At the time he was a fireman for the railroad (the person that shovels coal). I've also seen him listed in the 1910 census in Morgan county. I could use some help/suggestions on where to go next. 5/18/04

Hello Jack I just saw your query. I am a descendant of Solomon Bolton. He is my 2nd great grandfather. I would like to stop the myth of the Bolton's being of free color. They were Portuguese, Spaniard & German. Their hair was straight and most had dark brown eyes. The 1872 case was of Jerome C. Simmerman and Solomon's daughter Jemima who secretly married because Jerome's family thought her to be a degree of Negro. They had a son who died at an early age. Then a daughter was born and Jemima died. The dau. is Martha Adaline Simmerman. At an early age her mothers sister (Elizabeth) was told by Jerome's family to get her out of Hamilton County and to never come back because of having a fear of her inheriting her dads fortune. She was taken to Illinois. When the trial started, Samuel Williams went and got her, with the Aunt following. They went to court and won. I have the Chancery court case taken at the trial. It is the most interesting case I have ever read. There are 60 depositions with many names of people who lived in Hamilton County at that time. It speaks of happenings during the Civil War days. It is just to much to write on. I was going to put the case on CD's but my scanner went down. I am now making copies for anyone who wants to buy it. I will also have proof in it of Solomon's 1812 service, Picture of Martha, My great grandmother Sarah and her two husbands that is mentioned in the case. Tombstone pictures, stories of the Simmerman Cemetery and what shape it is in today. Very heart breaking. There is 519 pages of the case. I will be adding approximately 10 to 15 more pages. I have not looked recently to see exactly. I am charging only copying cost & shipping. That will be $80.00. I might say that is much less than what I paid and without the extra's I have mentioned. If you or anyone else is interested let me know as I am having a few copies made now. I do not think you will be disappointed in purchasing one. Kay
